ISHPEMING — The home will be tucked away in a cozy little neighborhood by a playground and Ishpeming High School, but regardless of whether they will take advantage of those attractions, Troy and Caitlin Connors will have a residence to call their own.

The Connors family, now residing in Tourville Apartments in Marquette, will live in the 111th Marquette County Habitat for Humanity home. Ground was broken on Tuesday on the site at 119 E. Superior St. in the city of Ishpeming.

Troy Connors said it will be “very nice” to move into the home.

“It seemed like forever coming,” Caitlin Connors said.

“Sweat equity” from the future residents is part of Habitat construction projects. The two already have been volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Harvey that served as a home improvement and donation center.

Jay Langer, construction manager for Habitat, is supervising the construction of the house, which will be a three-bedroom, two-bathroom, one-story home, and about 1,250 square feet. It also will have in-floor heating.

He said about 70 volunteers likely will help on the project, which is expected to be completed in seven to eight months. The hope is that work will begin in three weeks.

Langer called the Connors couple “a really good family.”

“It’s really rewarding working with families that have such appreciation for what we do,” he said.

Marquette County Habitat for Humanity said on its website that it is part of a global nonprofit housing organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; advocating for fair and just housing policies; and providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.
