MARQUETTE — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is releasing its revised plan for managing cultural resources on Lighthouse Island of the Huron National Wildlife Refuge in Lake Superior in Marquette County.

The Cultural Resources Management Plan guides administration of the historic Huron Islands Light Station and other cultural resources on Lighthouse Island. The final Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact documents are also available to the public at https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/131881.

“We received valuable feedback about the draft Environmental Assessment from citizens and our partners,” said Sara Siekierski, refuge manager, in a news release. “We used new information that was provided to alter the preferred alternative and land on a better plan.”

The revised Cultural Resources Management Plan enables the USFWS to meet the refuge purposes and obligations under the National Historic Preservation Act and the Wilderness Act. The plan calls to preserve the fog signal building, flagpole, radio tower, tramway/turntable, the nonhazardous utility infrastructure, pathway, dock, lighthouse, privy, assistant keepers quarters and the oil house.

The boathouse will undergo modified rehabilitation to keep some of its original elements while providing opportunities for critical signage and shelter after being stabilized in the short-term for safety.

The U.S. Coast Guard barracks, fuel tank, water pump and other utility structures posing safety or hazardous concerns will be documented and removed.

The USFWS will begin implementing the plan this summer. Development of formal agreements will also get underway with local partners, including the Keewenaw Bay Indian Community and Huron Island Lighthouse Preservation Association.
