MUNISING — Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has a new trail for snowshoe users. The trail has been a year in the making, and travels through a variety of habitats of beech, maple and conifer forests. The trail offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the quiet and solitude of the woods in winter.

“Several people over the years have inquired about snowshoeing opportunities in the park so we are very excited to introduce this new feature. The vision of the trail was driven by Sue Reece, our Chief of Interpretation and Education and completed through a park-wide effort. Please come and enjoy it,” Superintendent Dave Horne said.

The snowshoe trail is located adjacent to the park s Munising cross-country ski trails. It is 1.75 miles long and loops back on itself. It also connects users to the G-Loop ski trail. Including the G-Loop in the snowshoe excursion will add 1.5 miles to the trek.

The G trail isn’t tracked, so snowshoers and cross-country skiers will be able to share the trail. It also offers snowshoers and skiers great views of Lake Superior. To protect the groomed tracks, the other ski trails are off-limits to snowshoeing and hiking. Users can access the snowshoe trail from the ski trail parking lot located east of Munising near the end of East City Limits Road off H-58. Snowshoers will need to walk down to the end of City Limits Road to start on the trail.
