All About Town, with Mary Jayne

Fallout Shelter signs like the one above must raise the curiosity for anyone under the age of 60. Munising still has a couple of these signs in place on buildings that were designated to be safe places to shelter in the case of nuclear warfare. In the 1960s, children were instructed to crawl under their desk in case of an incoming missile. I myself filled sand bags with Lake Superior sand (before it was a national park of course) and barricaded the basement windows of our home. To this day, I keep extra groceries on hand in the southwest corner of my basement on shelving which was to be our escape route in case the Cuban Missile Crisis got out of hand. Interesting memories.

The sight of a circus tent going up brings back childhood memories of the Skerbeck’s Carnival every summer in Munising. Here, Culpepper & Merriweather. based out of Oklahoma. made a one-day stop in town the other day to host two circus shows. Watching them set up the tent was well organized and took a lot of man power. A lot of happy children in town that evening I’m sure.

This was a special time of the summer, strawberry picking. And after all, the picking, the next day was when the work started. Clean the berries, freezing some for shortcake. Was a tedious job, but always looked forward to it.

Starting at $3.23/week.
