MARQUETTE -- Marquette police have released a handful of additional details relative to the body that was discovered along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail last weekend.
The deceased person was an adult male and a local resident known to the police, according to Det. Capt. Chris Aldrich, chief of the MPD Detective Bureau.
"We had had previously contact with him," Aldrich confirmed, while declining to specify what type of contract it was or when. The deceased was found several yards off the trail near Wilson Street Saturday by a passerby, who reported the matter to police at about 5 p.m.
Because Marquette officers attempted resuscitation, the deceased apparently had not been dead for lengthy period of time. That said, Aldrich would not comment on the condition of the body or the scene.
"It's an open investigation," he said. "We have to cover all bases. We can't rule anything out at this point."
Aldrich did say, however, the preliminary cause of death has not been released nor will it be at this stage of the investigation. He said he is awaiting the results of an autopsy on the body.
The IOHT at that point is a black-topped trail that's well traveled. The area the body was found in is wooded but still within the city limits of Marquette, he added.
