KINGSFORD — Another road construction project in Kingsford is scheduled to start this week.

The East Breitung Avenue project, which includes resurfacing of the roadway from Carpenter Avenue to Woodbine Street, will be under construction for about 45 days. The work is being done by FA Industrial Services in Iron River.

Water main, access line and storm sewer work will be completed along with the resurfacing. State Category F funds of $280,000 will be used for a portion of the project and the city will pay $120,000.

The water main on Breitung Avenue will be connected to the water main that was installed on Woodbine Street last fall. The storm water grate in front of the Pizza Oven restaurant will be disconnected from the sewer system.

City Manager Mike Stelmaszek indicated the flooding issue that occurs in front of Pizza Oven during heavy rains will not be completely fixed until that grate in front of the Pizza Oven can be connected directly to the storm water system.

The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to add a storm water pipe on Carpenter Avenue.

When the reconstruction eventually gets through the Breitung Avenue intersection, the pipe in front of the Pizza Oven will then be disconnected from the city’s sewer system near Carpenter and reconnected to the storm water pipe on Carpenter Avenue, Stelmaszek said.

Moving the connection during the East Breitung project to a sewer connection at a lower elevation near Carpenter Avenue will help to alleviate the current problem and prepare for when the storm pipe can be connected to a storm water separation system on Carpenter Avenue.

This summer, MDOT is expected to start a 800-foot section of Carpenter Avenue from Hamilton to Woodward avenues. Work will continue on Carpenter until they reach the Menominee River.

No timeline has been set for the other projects on Carpenter Avenue.

Access to Pizza Oven will be from the alley.
