Scam targets eateries in I.M. area

IRON MOUNTAIN — Local restaurant chains are being targeted in an apparent scam that involves prepaid credit cards.

According to Iron Mountain Police Department, an individual claiming to be the CEO of the restaurant chain calls and relays information that is “inside” knowledge of the operation. The employee is instructed to go to the safe, take money out, and go to a business that sells prepaid credit cards. Once the employee completes the transaction, they are instructed to reveal the number on the back and send a picture of the card.

“Iron Mountain Police Department encourages businesses to educate their employees of this scam and report any suspicious activity,” Detective Lt. Adam Ray said.
