Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

Back then we had several duplicates of pharmacies, hardware, department, grocery, lodging, etc. and only a handful exists today. Wish I could have included the whole pamphlet which was lithographed by Globe Printing in Ishpeming. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Buying a car back then required going to a local car dealer (such as Cox Chevrolet in Munising as pictured here), picking up one of their catalogs and ordering the exact model and featured you personally wanted. Items such as radios and air-conditioning were not standard and it seems all cars had ash-trays. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
These advertisements from an Alger County Tourist guide found in my personal library brings me back to the many businesses that existed in the 50’s and 60’s and a few have survived the test of time. So many good memories of family and social gatherings at the Red Cedar Restaurant owned by Charles and Almeda Everett. It was about that time cheesecake was introduced in Munising if my memory serves me correctly, and Almeda was known for keeping her delicious dinner rolls and cheesecake recipe a well kept secret. They also operated the Beach Inn in Munising and Hotel Williams on Grand Island. What a special couple and their daughter Pat was one of my best friends throughout my lifetime.
