Stomp the Snow: Lantern-lit charity snowshoe walk Saturday
The second-annual Stomp the Snow, a lantern-lit family snowshoe walk, is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain. This year, Hardcore Outfitters has donated a pair of snowshoes to be given away Monday. During the walk, participants are asked to take a selfie in front of a Stomp the Snow sign, either at the clubhouse entrance or on the trail just past the tunnel of lights. After the event, organizers will provide information on how and where to post the photos. The winner of the snowshoes will be announced Monday on Hardcore Outfitters’ Facebook page and also posted to the Stomp the Snow Facebook page. IRON MOUNTAIN — The second-annual lantern-lit family snowshoe walk event will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain.
Stomp the Snow is organized through the Family Snowshoe Charity Association, a non-profit group formed to promote snowshoeing while supporting local charities. The free event is open to people of all abilities.
This year’s Stomp the Snow will benefit Pine Creek Woodworking and Imagination Factory Children’s Museum.
There will be more than 200 lanterns in the four loops, which ranging from a half-mile to 1 3/4 miles, with the course starting at the tunnel of lights sponsored by Mande Insurance & Investment Solutions and Edelweiss Coffee.
Aurora Liquors is the half-mile loop sponsor, LIUNA Local 1329 sponsored the 1-mile loop and the 1.75-mile loop is being sponsored by Superior Title — a Division of Bay Title.
New this year is the Marshfield Mile, a flat trail that will be illuminated with lanterns and glow wands.
“Early participants will receive a glow stick compliments of Marshfield Medical Center Dickinson,” said Patti Carollo, vice president and trail coordinator. “We encourage you to be creative and glow, but if you forget, we will have a limited supply of glow fidget wands you can get for a donation.”
Other attractions at the event include photo opportunities at the DTE Meteor Shower and the Jon Lasater State Farm Insurance Selfie Stations. Jacobson Heating is sponsoring the Frosty Fun Kids games area.
Participants can warm up at the Town & Country Sales and Peninsula Title warm and toasty fire pits. Hot cocoa and s’mores at the Tasty Treat stations will be provided by 41 Lumber and Erickson Jewelers. Northern Interstate Bank is sponsoring the Magical Cocoa Station, which is near the intersection of the 1- and 1.75-mile loops.
Snowshoers can even rest at the OPG Stars and Snowflakes Sitting Site, where they can gaze at the lights of downtown Iron Mountain.
They have other surprises planned for the event, but the public must come to find out what they will be.
After snowshoeing, participants are encouraged to stop inside the Pine Grove Country Club house, which will have food, drinks and live music. Tom Niebrzydowski will perform from 5 to 8 p.m., sponsored by Systems Control.
PGCC will have a pasta bar that includes pasta, two sauces, meatballs, salad and breadstick for $10 for those older than age 7. Kids ages 3 to 6 will be $6 and younger than 3 is free. Pine Grove will also bring back its specialty adult drinks.
“If you have never snowshoed before and always wanted to try, this event is for you” Tanya DalSanto said. “For those who do not own snowshoes, we will have over 40 pairs there for you to borrow. TruNorth Outfitters will also be there to provide their expertise in fitting participants.”
“Because of the generosity of our local community, we can make this a free event and still raise funds for other local non-profit groups,” said Jean O’Dette, president of the organization. “Our goal is that not only will the two non-profit groups benefit, but also the participants, local hotels, gas stations, restaurants and retail stores will benefit from the people we will bring into our community.”
Major sponsors include First National Bank & Trust, Pine Grove Country Club, M.J. Electric, Enbridge, Bacco Construction and Radio Results Network.
A few lantern sponsorships are still available but the deadline is noon today.
