More information released on Escanaba Township shooting

ESCANABA TOWNSHIP — More information has been released about a shooting in Escanaba Township that sent one man to the hospital on Jan. 21.

According to the police report obtained by the Daily Press through a Freedom of Information Act request, Jacob Cronick, age 28 of 8311 County Road 416 J Road, was at his home on on Jan. 21 when five people came to retrieve property belonging to a woman. The woman was among those at the residence, as was Eric Parotta — who was identified as the victim in Delta County Circuit Court earlier this week — and three other men.

Cronick was aware that people were coming to his home to collect the property, but had previously stated he did not want one of the men on his property. Multiple individuals who were present reported to police that Cronick had told the man he was not welcome and that the individual refused to leave.

One of the men slapped a phone out of Cronick’s hands, which led to Cronick attacking the man. The other men present attempted to break up the fight, with one of them placing Cronick in a headlock.

Cronick told police he was scared for his life and could hear multiple people saying “choke him out.”

According to comments made in the report by a responding Delta County Sheriff’s Officer who reviewed footage of the altercation and testimony from those present, the fight broke up before Cronick drew a 9mm Ruger SRT pistol. Those present began to retreat towards their vehicles, but according to the report, Cronick became the aggressor and pursued Parotta with “what seemed like focused intent.”

Parotta was shot in the abdomen. The bullet entered his stomach and exited out of his left side. He was transported to UP Health Systems in Marquette by Guardian Flight.

As of 4 p.m. the same day, Parotta was out of surgery with no additional complications.

Cronick fully cooperated with law enforcement following the incident. He waited for them in a folding chair in his front yard and did not resist arrest. He told police they could take the gun, which was unloaded on a table in his home.

A search warrant was executed at Cronick’s residence. In addition to the gun, police seized a spent shell casing located in the driveway where the altercation took place, Cronick’s iPhone — which contained video of the argument prior to the shooting — and the digital video recording unit (DVR) for Cronick’s security camera system.

Cronick was arraigned Monday on one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, less than murder or by strangulation. The felony charge Cronick faces carries a penalty of ten years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both. A probable cause conference, which is closed to the public, is set for Feb. 1. Cronick will next appear in open court on Feb. 8 for a preliminary examination hearing.
