Dickinson County Library announces January activities

RON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Library plans these activities in January:

≤ Book Club: 2 p.m. today at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Adults are invited to discuss the January book club selection, “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeymoon. New members are always welcome to join the group.

≤ Shh… Out!: 7 p.m. today at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Play board games and enjoy some snacks from the Friends of the Library at this month’s program. This program is for all teens in grades nine through 12 and is a welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ teens and allies to just be themselves. Therapy dog Maverick will also be in attendance. No registration is required.

≤ Bow Wows and Books: 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Patrons of all ages and reading abilities can practice their reading skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs Diogee, a sheepadoodle available from 5 to 6 p.m., and Angel, a teddy bear available from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Register by calling 906-774-1218 to sign up for a 15-minute time slot with either or both dogs.

≤ Winter Backyard Birding with Forester Josh: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Michigan District Forester Josh Isaac with the Dickinson-Menominee Conservation District will present on winter bird identification and discuss forest management and programs available to landowners. After the presentation, attendees will make reusable bird feeders. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required.

≤ Lego Club, Jr: 4 p.m. Monday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Calling all budding engineers. Kids in kindergarten through second grade will be challenged to build a winter-themed masterpiece at this month’s meeting. Playing with Legos increases fine motor skills, helps gain problem-solving skills, builds self-confidence, and more. No registration is required.

≤ Winter Storytimes: 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 16, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; and 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway. Warm up with good books, songs, activities and crafts at the Winter Storytime Sessions. These programs for kids to age 5 and their caregivers will use the five ready to read practices — reading, singing, talking, playing and writing — to promote early literacy practices to create lifelong readers. No registration is required.

≤ Solomonson Branch Book Club: 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway. Adults are invited to discuss the January book club selection, “The Covenant of Water” by Abraham Verghese. New members are always welcome to join book club.

≤ Gamers’ Club: 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway; 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; and 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Kids in third to eighth grades are invited to play a variety of video and board games at this monthly program. No registration is required.

≤ North Dickinson Branch Open House: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township. An open house in honor of the 20th anniversary of services is planned and also to give patrons a chance to meet the new associate, Dana Nelson, take photos with the fun photo booth, and enter a raffle to win an Amazon Kindle sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The Friends also will provide refreshments.

≤ STEM Night at Woodland Elementary: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Woodland Elementary, 2000 Pyle Drive in Kingsford. The library will participate in Woodland Elementary’s STEM Night. Visit the childrens’ librarians from Dickinson County Library for fort building of all sizes, a perfect activity for budding engineers.

≤ Ask about the library’s take-and-make craft kits for kids and adults. Inquire at each of the three Dickinson County Library sites.
