IM to sell surplus items online
IRON MOUNTAIN — Several items from the city of Iron Mountain will be offered for sale on the Wisconsin Surplus online auction site.
The city council this week approved City Manager Jordan Stanchina’s request to use the site to sell Christmas decorations replaced this year. There are 30 street pieces that will be sold in groups — seven groups of four and one group of two.
It’s hoped the groupings will attract better prices than trying to sell the entire collection as one, Stanchina said.
The city will also list a used air compressor from public works and a 2012 Dodge Charger police sedan with nearly 114,000 miles.
Results will be reported to the council once the auctions close, Stanchina said.
The Mount Horeb, Wis.-based online auction sells surplus assets for states and municipalities across the Midwest.
In other action Monday, the council:
≤ Approved payment of $19,822 from previously unspent August Lilja Memorial Trust funds to Gundlach Champion of Iron Mountain for part of the cost of a new entrance arch at Cemetery Park. The trust was established in 1994 for the purpose of funding beautification projects within the city.
≤ Again discussed traffic safety on U.S. 2 near the east city limits in a 55 mph zone where several serious crashes have occurred and where an ALDI store recently opened. A lower speed limit would require action by the Michigan Department of Transportation. Stanchina and others are skeptical of requesting an MDOT speed study, saying it’s unlikely to bring change. Ed Mattson, director of police and fire services, said motorists generally aren’t exceeding the posted limit but there is a problem with the left-turn lane being used as a travel lane and motorists failing to judge the speed of oncoming traffic.
