QUESTION:
What are moose called in Great Britain?
a. Red deer
b. Elk
c. Wapiti
d. Bogwalkers
ANSWER:b. Although moose have probably been extinct in Great Britain for a thousand years, they are called elk, from the Latin name, alces alces. Variants of this name are used throughout Europe. In Germany they are called elch and in Sweden, where they are very common, they are called älg. Our word, “moose” is from the Algonquin. The animals we call elk are members of the deer family, Cervus canadensis.
