Breitung to raise rates for garbage collection
QUINNESEC — Refuse collection fees in Breitung Township will rise by $40 per year to reach a rate of $120 per year to help pay increased costs.
In 2022, the cost for collection and removal was $360,140, while the projected cost for 2023 is $552,000, an increase of about $192,000, Superintendent Steve Mulka said. The township absorbed that cost to allow residents the chance to plan for an increase in 2024, he said.
The increase would generate an additional $106,240, while the township would absorb the remaining $85,760. This brings the total supplemental funding by the township to $233,280 to provide residents some relief, Mulka said.
A motion to approve a rate of $120 per year passed unanimously Monday. Amendments to the refuse ordinance were tabled until language could be worded more clearly.
The board also:
— Will move its Nov. 6 meeting to the East Kingsford Fire Station No. 2 due to the township hall in Quinnesec being set up for Nov. 7 elections. The North Breitung Fire Station No. 3 is also a polling location and will also be unavailable. Supervisor Denny Olson stated that earlier in the year when the meeting schedule was made, the first November meeting was moved up a week so it wouldn’t conflict with deer season, but the election was not taken into consideration. Trustee Rich Wales brought up a concern that the window to move a meeting may have already passed, as Nov. 6 was only 14 days away. Trustee Aaron Rochon had a copy of the rules and found that only 10 days were needed to change the location.
— Heard Township Clerk Wendy Larson say the board room will be occupied Oct. 23-27 in order to conduct training for election inspectors. The room will need to be secure as the voting machines will be present.
