Man arrested after threats against schools made

IRON MOUNTAIN — A 30-year-old man has been arrested after authorities received a tip on possible threats made to an area elementary school.

This threat was supposed to happen during “Spirit Week,” at either Woodland Elementary in Kingsford or North Elementary in Iron Mountain, Edwin Mattson, director of Iron Mountain Police and Fire Services, stated in a news release.

Both Iron Mountain and Kingsford Public Safety received information about the threat about 4 p.m. Sunday. Within hours they determined the person suspected lived not in Kingsford as originally thought but in Iron Mountain.

A warrant was obtained to search the man’s residence, but officers first did surveillance before starting the search about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the news release. The 30-year-old was taken into custody and lodged in the Dickinson County Correctional Center pending the prosecutors office reviewing the complaint for possible charges.

No further information would be released until the man is arraigned in district court, Mattson said in the news release.

The Iron Mountain Police Department was assisted in the investigation by Kingsford Public Safety, which also aided in the search and taking the man into custody, as did Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department and Norway Police Department.

In a written announcement, Iron Mountain Superintendent Jerome Sardina said district officials had intended to cancel North Elementary classes Monday to “err on the side of caution” but decided to have school as usual after law enforcement advised that with a possible suspect in custody both North and Woodland could safely meet.

Sardina thanked the law enforcement agencies for quickly resolving the incident, along with Breitung Township Schools for working with Iron Mountain to develop a plan in tandem.

Starting at $3.23/week.
