Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

This week’s historical photo shows the lobby of the Beach Inn which was for many years the best hotel in town. It was located on the lakefront between the current Lakeshore Manor and Pictured Rocks Cruise Company. The entrance alone was classy with wicker chairs, high ceiling and, of course, a piano for anyone to entertain. I remember going there to a birthday party when I was very young. The manager’s daughter (Pat Everett) was a good friend of mine and I remember attending her birthday party there. What a treat! (Photos courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
The hotel succumbed to a massive fire on Feb. 14, 1951 on a frigid 10 below zero day. There were part-time roomers at that time and I remember seeing people gathering their belongings and evacuating during the slow fire which eventually took the whole structure. Overall I was able to document this historical fire with photos and years later, the Alger County Courthouse fire. Sad days for Munising.(Photos courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
