Carney man will do prison time for theft
MENOMINEE — A Carney man has been sentenced to a prison term on stolen property charges. Eric Michael Laurin, 39, of Carney was sentenced to 30 months to five years in prison for larceny of a firearm, two counts of receiving and concealing stolen property $1,000 – $20,000 and a single count of tampering with EMC equipment, according to Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg.
According to court documents and testimony, detectives from the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police investigated a number of contemporaneous property thefts in the northern Menominee County area during January 2023 in which Laurin was identified, arrested and charged.
Laurin was required to wear a GPS tether, with a restriction of “house arrest” as part of his bond in the three felony cases. On March 30, Laurin violated the terms of his pretrial release order by removing the court-mandated GPS tether from his person and concealing himself from law enforcement. Laurin was previously convicted of the 15-year felony of false pretenses – $$20,000 – $50,000 in the 41st Circuit Court on Oct. 24, 2021 and was on active felony probation at the time he committed the four new offenses.
“Mr. Laurin is a predatory criminal, Rogg said. “His sentences needed to reflect the seriousness of his offenses and promote respect for the law.
“Judge Mary B. Barglind has sent a very clear message to Mr. Laurin, and the community he preyed upon, that our government will not tolerate continued defiance of the legal obligations imposed upon him in a civilized society,” Rogg said. “The only thing that can stop some people is a lengthy prison sentence, because the citizens of our community are simply not safe around this predator. I appreciate Judge Barglind supporting me by these prison sentences in protecting the citizens of Menominee County.
