Norway puts off decision on repairs to storage building

NORWAY — Norway City Council will take another look at a request for storage garage improvements after rejecting it in the past.

The council Monday reviewed a proposal from Electric Department Foreman Scott Hegy, who said three garage doors on the building are inoperable, with only one working door on the gable end.

Equipment gets buried in the garage very quickly and a lot of time is spent moving things around to get the needed equipment out, he said.

Three bids were received for the work, with the lowest coming from Delta Door Co. of Gladstone for $9,669.

Hegy also said a concrete apron for the storage building is in poor condition and should be replaced. He estimated 20 yards of concrete would be needed and the cost would be about $4,000 if a city crew did the work.

The budget has $10,000 specifically for replacing the doors and another $6,000 for building renovations.

Mayor Candy Brew noted the request has been before the council once or twice before and voted down.

“I kind of feel like sometimes it is a chess game, if they bring it back again we are going to vote for it, that we are going to forget,” Brew said. “I do not forget.”

Council member Jeff Muraro said just because it is in the budget does not mean the council has to approve the spending.

Department of Public Works Supervisor Dave Bal said the building is accessed many times a day and other departments, such as public works and water, also use it. This adds to everything that is kept inside the building, he said.

No motion was made to approve the spending. However, a motion to suspend discussions for a month to give council members a chance to see the building for themselves was approved.

In other business, the council:

≤ Unanimously approved a $11,014 bid from Pomp’s Tire Service of Iron Mountain to replace tires on the city’s grader. Pomp’s was one of only three companies that have a service truck that allows them to come to Norway to do the work on site.

≤ Accepted a $10,795 bid from Tunnel Vision Pipeline Services of Escanaba for the epoxy lining of 15 feet of sewer pipe that crosses White Creek near Holy Spirit School. The pipe has leaked in the past and has a repair clamp on it.

≤ Authorized buying a replacement boom for a flail mower for $2,607 from Flint New Holland Inc. of Burton, Mich. The flail mower is used for such tasks as cutting brush in alleys and mowing behind guardrails.
