Houghton releases details of deck demo

HOUGHTON — The demolition of the Lakeshore Drive parking deck will begin in early June, with parking on the east side of the upper deck blocked off starting May 30.

Construction will start on the east side. Parking on the west will remain open until the east side is finished.

The city of Houghton released an updated timeline Monday morning after holding a preconstruction conference with the contractor. A more detailed schedule will follow in a few days, the city said.

“Please note that we are currently discussing ways of making things move even faster – and also note that things are subject to change,” the city release said. “While we all want things to move as quickly as possible, we all have to realize that safety will be the #1 concern; so things might take a little longer than some might want. We are going to do everything we can to keep people informed.”

MJO will be the main contractor. The large-scale demolition of the deck was subcontracted out to Veit, a company from Minnesota.

This week, MJO will take pictures and video of the buildings touching the deck or near it to document their condition before demolition. Those will provide a baseline to help assess any claims of damages resulting from the work.

During demolition, there will be seismic monitoring set up outside the buildings to measure any potential bumping and shaking.

The city will hold weekly coordination meetings with businesses along Lakeshore Drive until the deck is fully down.

Here’s when the major events will happen:

On May 30, they will begin blocking the east side doors, putting up traffic control, and other measures. The assumption is that there will be no parking on the east side of the upper deck starting that day.

Around May 31, they will close Lakeshore Drive to traffic from Huron Street to the west end of the east deck (the narrow part between the two decks). Parking under the east deck won’t be available. Those with trash pickup in that area will be contacted directly to make sure their trash can be picked up.

Around June 5, Veit will begin the demolition of the east deck. That work could take up to four weeks. The waterfront trail will be detoured for part of this time. MJO will get started on the street, sidewalks, etc. on the east side right behind the demolition work as it progresses.

Around the end of June, Veit will move to the west deck. Exact dates will be known after they’ve started on the east deck.
