Trial date set in Arizona

Former Hancock man jailed in murder of former Lake Linden resident

Elliot Bennett

MESA, Arizona — A trial date has been set for a Lake Havasu City, Arizona, man, formerly of Hancock, accused of murdering a former Lake Linden resident earlier this month in Arizona.

A Maricopa County grand jury found probable cause to indict Elliot Bennett, 19, on three charges: first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and endangerment.

Bennett’s initial pretrial conference is scheduled for May 12, with a trial scheduled to start Nov. 16, according to Maricopa County’s court schedule.

Bennett allegedly shot Jacques Bourdeau, 44, several times inside the house in Mesa, where Bourdeau lived with cousins.

Witnesses said Bourdeau went outside to meet Bennett after he arrived when they heard sounds of gunfire.

Bourdeau ran inside and locked the door, after which Bennett broke in and tracked Bourdeau to the bathroom, where he fatally shot him, witnesses said in court documents.

Bennett drove off in a vehicle matching the description of one seen on security footage shortly after the incident. Police later found a car matching the description at the home Bennett shared with his parents in Lake Havasu City, near the California border, according to court documents.

Police arrested Bennett at his home two days later.

Bennett is lodged in Maricopa County Jail on a $1 million bond.
