State data shows Iron County adds virus death

IRON RIVER — Iron County had one of the three new deaths in the Upper Peninsula blamed on COVID-19 in the past week, state health data showed.

Dickinson County recorded 17 new confirmed virus positives since March 21, five fewer than the previous week, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website. Iron County had only four cases, down nine from the week before.

The MDHHS website Tuesday added 136 confirmed COVID-19 positives since March 21, down 41 from the previous week, to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 32 in Marquette County; 18 in Houghton and Delta counties; 17 in Dickinson County; 15 in Menominee County; nine in Chippewa County; seven in Gogebic County; six in Baraga County; four in Iron County; three in Schoolcraft County; two in Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Mackinac counties; and one in Alger County.

Along with the Iron County fatality, the state recorded two confirmed virus-related deaths in Delta County.

The Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 64,654 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 992 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 604 confirmed cases and 65 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 790 confirmed cases and 890 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and seven probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,209 confirmed, 148 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,296 confirmed, 872 probable and nine deaths, 11 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,416 confirmed cases and 827 probable, 14 deaths and six probable; Mackinac County, 1,950 confirmed cases and 1,071 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,171 confirmed cases, 460 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,217 confirmed cases and 431 probable, 85 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,655 confirmed cases and 713 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,261 confirmed cases and 6,076 probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 5,002 confirmed cases, 2,250 probable and 69 deaths, 16 probable; Dickinson County, 6,344 confirmed cases and 3,139 probable, 107 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,390 confirmed cases, 1,261 probable, 96 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,192 confirmed cases and 3,410 probable, 154 deaths and 42 probable; and Marquette County, 15,157 confirmed cases, 4,520 probable and 147 deaths, 24 probable.

The MDHHS on Tuesday added 6,562 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since March 21, up 573 for the week, or an average of about 937 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,084,114 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since March 21 recorded 89 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, the same number as the week before, to reach 42,456.

The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,675 COVID-19 positives so far, up 32 since March 22, and 149 deaths; Vilas County, 6,536 positives, up 11, and 108 deaths; Forest County, 3,390 positives, up 10, and 56 deaths; Iron County, 1,837 positives, up six, and 50 deaths; and Florence County, 1,359 positives, up seven, and 17 deaths.
