All About Town with Mary Jayne

The photo above left shows an early performance from the Vanguards called the Spring Sing 1970. The show was directed by Walter Jonas, whom I believe was the first director of the group. Many, many years later, Walter’s son, Peter Jonas, became the director for more years. This was, I believe, their first uniform consisting of casual sweaters. I believe several years later, they wore leisure suits. Any concert with the Vanguards participating is time well spent. The photo above right shows the 1970 spring scene, only the stage has a lot more participants. I see some Catholic school uniforms, cheerleaders, etc — so it was truly a BIG SPRING SING. And in the photo below, most Upper Peninsula residents are used to seeing highway signs such as this deer crossing sign. It does bring to mind a piece I read once about a bus full of tourists from somewhere who were not familiar with the signs. So, they had actually stopped the bus and were waiting for the deer to cross. Yes, I really did read that somewhere. (Photos courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
