All about TOWN

Activities on Munising Bay were abundant with ice fishermen competing for the prize catch in a well-attended fishing tournament recently. Our last stop of the day found a group of recreational scuba divers from downstate testing out their winter diving skills in Lake Superior. The two in the water had just emerged from their planned dive for open-water certification, one being the instructor and then the student, who no doubt passed the test. An extreme sport for sure and good for our local economy. Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)

This snowmobile race comes under the memory lane. I believe mainly through the years in 1960s era, Munising was trying to become the snowmobile place of the midwest with this Grand Island race. This shows the snowmobile on the way up to the courthouse on one end of Elm Avenue and then start the race at the other end of Elm Avenue, proceeding out on Lake Superior to Grand Island and back. A few years later, a snowmobile track was put out Wetmore way and was successful a few years. However, irregular winter weather and various things brought this to a halt. Snowmobiles are seen as the machines come back from Grand Island. I do remember one year they had to cancel at the very last minute when a blizzard started and they didn’t want to lose anyone on the lake. Now those were the days. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
