IRON MOUNTAIN — Think spring? You’ll be tempted over the next couple of months, forecasters say, but the warmer air may be short-lived.

An up-and-down temperature pattern is expected in the Midwest, with an overall neutral outlook from the National Weather Service through the end of April.

AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok, meanwhile, expects a cooldown just as spring appears in sight. “There’s going to be some type of setback as we head into either late March or April,” he said.

There could even be a snowstorm or two during April, he added.

This week, highs are expected to reach into the 30s, raising thoughts of spring even as groundhog Punxsutawney Phil on last week declared six more weeks of winter.

The Climate Prediction Center estimates a 38% chance of above-normal precipitation in the Upper Peninsula over the next three months and a 28% chance of below-normal.

2023 will feature a near- to slightly above-normal number of tornadoes across the U.S., with April likely to be the busiest month.

More than 200 twisters are projected to touch down in April, most of which will spin up across the central U.S. The long-term average is 178 in April.
