The small town showdown

Guy’s Grocery Games, Iron Chef, and Chopped are all great show’s I’ve been known to binge watch. I always find myself drawn to these shows during the winter. They inspire me to try new recipes and ironically, get off the couch and do something. While I love the outdoors, I do not enjoy the cold weather as much as I did when I was a child. My passion for cooking is definitely my coping mechanism for the long winters we incur.

When I took the position as Event Coordinator here at the GINCC, I promised to bring something new to the community. The opportunity has quickly presented itself for me. Why not draw the locals out of their homes to enjoy a community cook-off?

The Small Town Showdown while a competition, is still a playful and fun way for our participants to show off their cooking skills. Whether you are a champion chili maker or maybe the best undiscovered pastry chef of the Yoop, we want to showcase you and your recipe.

On February 4th during the Heikki Lunta Festival, all of our participants will meet up at the Negaunee Senior Citizens Center with their concoctions. Queue our judges. The doors will be open to the general public who will pay an entry fee to come in and sample the recipes and be our judges. Each of our judges will be given four votes.

Our four categories will include the Soup/Chili category, Yooper Favorites (ie pasties, cudighi, or nisu), Secret Family Recipe (ie Mac’n’Cheese, Smoked Meats, or anything you are proud to show), and finally a dessert category. Samples will be given to the public and they will have time to vote on their favorites. At the conclusion of the evening, we will award one winner for each category. That recipe will not only receive bragging rights, but will also win a prize.

We hope to have something for everyone. Our plan is to have some games or activities for kids, a place to warm up, and some fun flavors of foods. If you are interested in being one of our contestants, reach out to us by telephone: (906) 486-1111 or by email: ginccmarketing@gmail.com. Contestant spots will be limited due to our space, so be sure to sign up soon!
