Kingsford to regulate outdoor woodstoves

KINGSFORD — The city council has agreed to have two issues brought before the Kingsford Planning Commission in January.

City Manager Mike Stelmaszek told the council Monday he has heard complaints about an outdoor woodstove that doesn’t have a pipe that goes high enough, so the smoke goes through the neighborhood.

The city has no ordinance to regulate the length of pipe needed to vent the stove. There are ordinances in nearby communities, he said.

Right now there is only one house involved, but Stelmaszek would like to have something in place before there are more. The city will work with the homeowner once an ordinance goes forward, he said.

He also told the council he was approached by a business that wants to have lockable containers at Cowboy Lake and Menominee River Park for people to rent kayaks and allow them to be stored. To operate, the business would need a special use permit.

Stelmaszek said he doesn’t want it to be a determent to other park users. He plans to investigate how other cities manage something like this.

Cynthia Dixon-Miller questioned how the city would handle it if there were more than one company seeking special use permits. “There’s a lot of issues. Do you give a permit to 50 different companies? You still have to have room for people to use the park,” she said.

In other business, the council:

— Learned 12 deer have been taken in the city’s managed archery hunt, which is one more than last year, but with no recent harvests.

— Noted garbage collection will occur on the next two Mondays, despite the city offices being closed. The first January council meeting will be moved to Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Starting at $3.23/week.
