Afghan rights leader heartbroken after year of Taliban rule

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A year after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, prominent Afghan human rights activist Sima Samar is still heartbroken over what happened to her country. The former minister of women’s affairs said in an interview Friday that it’s a sad anniversary for most Afghans. Samar is now a visiting scholar at Harvard and has written the first draft of an autobiography. She urged the international community to keep up the pressure on the Taliban to allow all girls to attend secondary school. She also stressed the importance of education for young boys, who without any schooling or skills could be at risk of getting involved in opium production, weapons smuggling or participating in violence.
