Delta tops U.P. in new virus cases

ESCANABA — State data Tuesday added 16 more confirmed COVID-19 positives in Delta County — again the highest number of new cases in the Upper Peninsula — along with a new death attributed to the virus.

Delta County leads the 15 U.P. counties in confirmed COVID-19 fatalities at 69.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Tuesday also had two new confirmed positives in Schoolcraft and one in Menominee County.

For the Upper Peninsula, the MDHHS on Tuesday had 45 new confirmed positives: 16 in Delta County; 13 in Marquette County; four in Houghton County; two in Schoolcraft, Baraga and Mackinac counties; and one each in Dickinson, Menominee, Iron, Chippewa, Luce and Keweenaw counties. Marquette County had a new coronavirus-related death.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 18,910 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 409 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 140 confirmed cases and 31 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 173 confirmed cases and 174 probable, one confirmed death and one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 290 confirmed cases and 56 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 307 confirmed, 186 probable and two deaths, four probable; Mackinac County, 386 confirmed cases and 224 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 396 confirmed, 56 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 556 confirmed cases, 113 probable and 33 deaths; Iron County, 924 confirmed cases and 65 probable, 42 deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 1,000 confirmed cases and 360 probable, 22 deaths and 28 probable; Chippewa County, 1,012 confirmed cases and 1,338 probable, and 27 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,728 confirmed cases, 310 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,341 confirmed cases and 312 probable, 57 deaths and 16 probable; Houghton County, 2,427 confirmed cases, 593 probable, 32 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,165 confirmed cases and 616 probable, 69 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,065 confirmed cases, 775 probable and 57 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS Tuesday posted 3,676 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total to date of 829,520. The state Tuesday recorded 105 deaths blamed on the virus — including 48 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — to reach 17,429.
