Spring road restrictions announced in Dickinson, Florence counties

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Transportation and local agencies have enacted additional annual spring weight restrictions to protect roads.

The Dickinson County Road Commission imposed and enforced seasonal and speed restrictions on county roads south of M-69 in Randville that began at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Additionally, restrictions will be enforced on all county roads beginning at 9 this morning, until further notice, the commission said.

Up to normal loads are permitted on roads designated as “all season.” A list of all-season roads can be found on the Dickinson County Road Commission website at www.dickinsoncrc.com.

Additional information regarding restrictions in Dickinson County and statewide can be found on the County Road Associations website at www.micountyroads.org.

Across the border, the Florence County Highway Department will impose temporary seasonal weight restrictions on all county trunk highways — N, B, C, D, U and NN — at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The restrictions on Florence County highways are 6 tons per axle and 18 tons gross. Town weight restrictions may vary, said Joe Witynski, Florence County highway commissioner.

In Michigan, effective 8 this morning, weight restrictions will be imposed and enforced on all state trunkline highways for the entire state. State routes typically carry M, I, or US designations.

In the restricted areas, the following will apply:

≤ On routes designated as “all-season” (designated in green and gold on the MDOT Truck Operators Map), there will be no reduction in legal axle weights.

≤ On routes designated as “seasonal” (designated in solid or dashed red on the MDOT Truck Operators Map), there will be a posted weight reduction of 25 percent for rigid (concrete) pavements and 35 percent for flexible (asphalt) pavements.

≤ All extended permits will be valid for oversize loads in the weight-restricted area on the restricted routes. Single-trip permits will not be issued for any overweight loads or loads exceeding 14 feet in width, 11 axles and 150 feet in overall length on the restricted routes.

County road commissions and city public works departments put in place their own seasonal weight restrictions, which usually, but not always, coincide with state highway weight restrictions. Signs are generally posted to indicate which routes have weight restrictions in effect.

In Wisconsin, the seasonal posted roads period will go into effect statewide beginning at 12:01 p.m. today. These highway sections have signs posted indicating the allowable weight limits.

The frozen road declaration in Wisconsin ended statewide effective today.
