Baraga crash injures 5

BARAGA TOWNSHIP — Baraga County Deputies responded to a personal injury accident involving a pick-up truck and an SUV on U.S. 41 in Baraga Township, at approximately 8 a.m. Wednesday. The crash occurred near Selkey Road. according to a release from the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office.

Initial investigation suggests a southbound pickup truck, lost control due to weather conditions, crossed the centerline, and was struck by a northbound SUV.

The pick-up truck was occupied by the driver and four passengers who were transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, the release states. The SUV was occupied by the driver who was also transported to BCMH. Conditions of all occupants are unknown at this time. The status of the accident remains under investigation by the Baraga County Sheriff’s Department.

A relative of those in the pickup truck told the Daily Mining Gazette that the truck was driven by an adult male, and the passengers were his three nieces. All three were later transferred to Marquette Hospital, the relative said. The fourth passenger, a small boy, was not injured in the crash.

All three minor girls suffered serious injuries, including broken bones. The driver sustained serious injuries as well, said the relative.

Baraga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Baraga Police Department, KBIC Police Department, Michigan State Police, L’Anse and Baraga Fire and 906 Towing.
