NEGAUNE -- COVID-19 has set almost everyone's plans back or in some cases have stalled them altogether. In the case of Negaunee's reactivated Downtown Development Association, we are moving full steam ahead.

Before COVID, the DDA was in the middle of taking applications for to hire a firm to assist in developing the next stage of the DDA. This firm would be responsible for a number of activities, which include fulfilling state requirements, developing DDA programs, attending DDA meetings, assist in the development of the proposed Marketing Branding Plan, and assist in developing DDA future fundamental objectives, among many others.

At the DDA's last meeting in January, the sole application to hire a firm was reviewed. The firm that applied is directed by Mona Lang, former director of Marquette's Downtown Development Authority, for 21-years.

Lang, brings considerable expertise in this line of work and has many connections that may aide Negaunee. In particular, her expertise in grant writing and infrastructure development in the downtown will prove invaluable to Negaunee. Upon review of Lang's credentials, the DDA decided to make a recommend to the Negaunee City Council to hire Lang's firm.

The areas concertation for DDA in 2021 are, development local historic district, to take advantage of special grants and funds and preserve the downtown's historic charm; developing DDA orientation manual; to assist in training and educating the DDA board members; to develop a Marketing Branding Plan, to promote downtown Negaunee and the community; and providing feedback in design of the downtown.

If selected, Lang will help to lay the basic foundation for Negaunee's DDA now and for future boards. Our hopes are that with her leadership, expertise, and connections that we will be able to fast track our DDA and begin to further attract new businesses, while growing and stabilizing our existing businesses. We will continue to work with our local partners to achieve these goals.

Council will review both Lang's credentials, the DDA's recommendation, and contract before making a decision.

It is hoped that these items will be reviewed at the next city council meeting in August.
