Man dies in single-vehicle crash

IRON MOUNTAIN — A man died in a single-vehicle accident that took place at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Federal Forest Highway 16 and Smokey Lake Road in Stambaugh Township.

The Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post said an investigation determined a pickup truck operated by 64-year-old Verne St. Pierre of Phelps, Wisconsin, left the roadway and crashed into several trees. The driver was extricated from the vehicle.

Police said St. Pierre told troopers at the scene he had fallen asleep. He was transported to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River where he succumbed to his injuries. St. Pierre was wearing his seatbelt, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

Assisting at the scene were the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, the West Iron County Fire Department, Iron County Search and Rescue, Aspirus EMS, Phelps EMS and Northland Towing.
