Finnish group to play on July 16 at Ishpeming Elks Club

ISHPEMING — A dance will be held 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, at the Ishpeming Elks Club. It is open to the public.

Music for the dance is being provided by musicians from Minneapolis who call themselves Lauluaika in Finnish, or Song Time in English.

Their leader is Ralph Tuttila, who grew up in Ishpeming. They play all kinds of music for dancing, including many Finnish tunes, Nordic music, waltzes, polkas, schottisches and more. Ralph has asked local performer Tanja Stanaway to sing a couple of songs with the group.

The dance is sponsored by the Lake Superior Chapter of the Finlandia Foundation National. Tickets are $10 at the door.

There will be refreshments and of course the Elks Club bar. Members of the Chapter are asked to bring cookies and bars for the coffee table.

Tanja Stanaway will have her “Heart to Finland” traveling store at the dance, stocked with chocolates, licorice, coffee candies, cardamom and CDs. She has a brand new CD Volume 6 in which one of the tunes is a Stanaway original, “Ode to Trenary Toast”. It was composed and performed by Tanja and recorded in Gerald Kippola’s studio.

Tammy Ruppell will bring her delicious cardamom coffee breads and Finnish rye bread to sell at the dance.

There will be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes. Members of the Lake Superior Chapter can pay their dues of $10 per year per person.

The Ishpeming Elks Club is located at 597 Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming. There is plenty of parking. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call 906-485-1971.
