Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program welcomes new doctor

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program announced the addition of Dr. Raquel Clary-Lantis as the newest faculty member to join its program.

According the a UP Health System press release, Clary-Lantis brings a wealth of knowledge with over 19 years of experience in family medicine, geriatrics, and palliative medicine.

She earned her medical degree from the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed residency training in family medicine at Florida Hospital-East Orlando and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has served multiple roles including most recently as a medical director, fellowship director, and an attending physician in hospice and palliative medicine at Trinity Health IHA, formerly known as St. Joseph Mercy Health System, in Ann Arbor. “We are very excited Dr. Clary-Lantis is joining our faculty,” said Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program Director, Dr. Brian Waite. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in medical education and patient care. She will be a tremendous asset in our residents’ training and in the expansion of our hospice and palliative care services for the patients of the UP.”

Clary-Lantis grew up in Jackson, Michigan where her dad was a family doctor. She is excited to join the family medicine residency and help teach future family doctors with a special interest in geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine.

“My husband and I have relocated to the Upper Peninsula to be closer to family in Houghton and Negaunee, including our first grandchild,”said Dr. Clary-Lantis.

“Visiting and traveling in the UP was my favorite childhood memory, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to work and be a part of this community.” Her professional interests include advanced care planning and communication, electronic medical records, and medical education. She completed additional training at the University of Michigan to obtain her Green Belt certification which focuses on improving processes to help improve the quality of care. She completed palliative care education and practice courses, PCEP, at Harvard Medical School, followed by the Physician Leadership Academy training at Trinity Health in Livonia, Michigan.

Dr. Clary-Lantis has served on numerous committees focused on medical education and improving healthcare delivery. She served on the Graduate Medical Education Committee, St. Joseph Mercy Health; Clinical Quality Improvements and Advance Care Planning Committees, Trinity Health, IHA;MI-POST State Advisory Board; Cancer Committee;Quality and Safety Committee; Code Blue Committee at Trinity Health, St. Joseph Mercy Health Ann Arbor; and, Michigan Health Information Network, MIPOST Education Committee. She is a member of the American Osteopathic Association; American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians; American Association of Hospice & Palliative Medicine; Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians; Michigan Osteopathic Association; American Geriatrics Society and the American Medical Directors Association/Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. Dr. Clary-Lantis’ responsibilities will include family medicine, geriatrics, and hospice and palliative medicine. She will teach in the family medicine residency and help open a palliative care clinic in the UPHS -Marquette Cancer Center. Palliative care is a specialty that helps support patients, and their families, who are diagnosed with a serious illness such as cancer, chronic lung disease, heart disease (such as heart failure),and neurological conditions (such as dementia) and managing symptoms of the disease, side effects of treatment, and improving their quality of life. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and dog, doing outdoor activities, settling into, and organizing their new home, and learning about their new surroundings.
