News from the Greater Munising Area: A downtown business decorating contest and the ‘12 Days of Rekindle’

JAYMIE DEPEW

The Munising Downtown Development Authority last week revealed the winners of its 2020 Downtown Business Decorating Contest.

Munising’s DDA encourages businesses located in its district every year to decorate their buildings for the holiday season by offering 50/50 matching grant funds of up to $250 for adornments. Typically, a group of judges on the night of Rekindle the Spirit – the city’s winter holiday event, gather to check out the businesses downtown and determine the winning contenders. Since Rekindle the Spirit is being held virtually this year, the judges viewed businesses separately and made their decision over a Zoom meeting.

Everyone did a wonderful job turning the little city along the bay into a magical holiday scene, making it a difficult decision. With that said, the following businesses were recognized for their efforts:

South Bay Outfitters, first place

Driftwood Deli and ByGeorge Brewing Company, second place

Peoples State Bank, third place

Photos of the decorations can be found online at www.algercountychamber.com/blog. The businesses all have Facebook pages, as well, so be sure to check them out while you’re at it.

As previously stated, Rekindle the Spirit, which is usually held in downtown Munising the first Thursday in December, was – like many events – altered this year due to safety concerns surrounding COVID-19. Instead of hosting a physical event, the Alger County Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Munising Visitors Bureau and Cameron Media to produce a series of holiday-themed videos that were filmed at Gallery Coffee Company in Munising called “The 12 Days of Rekindle.”

After months of brainstorming, participating in virtual meetings, researching copyright infringement laws, writing scripts, and so on, everything – fortunately – came to fruition the way we hoped and we’re proud to share this project with Alger County and beyond. From Monday, Dec. 7, to Friday, Dec. 18, one video will be (and has been) released daily at noon on the Chamber’s Facebook page, YouTube channel, and website.
