Northern pike anglers reported doing well near vegetation and windblown points. Ontonagon River: The river continued to see low angling effort over the past week as inclement weather impeded fishing conditions. A few anglers targeted walleye, though these efforts reportedly yielded minimal success.
Ontonagon/Silver City/Union Bay: Angling effort from the Ontonagon, Silver City, and Union Bay access sites was low. Strong winds and heavy rain showers significantly limited lake access throughout the week. Angler reports were sparse, but included catches of lake trout, coho salmon, and Chinook salmon in low numbers. These fish were caught by anglers trolling in depths ranging from 20 to 100 feet of water. Shore anglers fishing from Union Bay also experienced limited success landing coho salmon in low numbers.
Black River Harbor: The harbor saw low angling effort over the past week as weather significantly limited lake access. As conditions allowed, anglers reported mixed catches of brown trout, coho salmon, and lake trout in low numbers. Reports indicated that these fish were caught by anglers trolling in 20 to 120 feet of water. Shore anglers reported no success fishing from the breakwalls or within the harbor.
St. Ignace: Few Chinook salmon were caught in the Carp River and offshore in Lake Huron near Nunns Creek. Anglers floating or bottom-bouncing skein had the most success. Salmon were also caught on spoons, beads, spinners, and minnow-style crankbaits.
Grand Marais: Anglers fishing the mouth of the Sucker River caught coho salmon and a few rainbow trout while casting spoons and using spawn.
Manistique: Chinook salmon were reported in the river, with anglers catching them on beads, skein, and shallow-diving, brightly colored crankbaits or spinners. Anglers reported that fish appeared to be nearing the end of the run, though enough fish remained in the river to provide active angling.
Marquette: No creel interviews were conducted with any boat anglers targeting lake trout. A few reports indicated shore anglers caught lake trout and coho salmon off the lower breakwall near the lighthouse during early morning and late evening hours. Boat anglers trolling near the river mouths out of Lower Harbor caught fair numbers of coho salmon and steelhead, along with an occasional Chinook salmon. Brown trout remained one of the most consistently caught species in both the Chocolay River and Carp River. Following recent rain, fish movement upstream increased significantly, resulting in a substantial surge in coho salmon numbers. Anglers also reported catching steelhead in the Carp River, with a few additional reports from the Chocolay River, particularly near the river mouth.
Au Train: No targeted lake trout effort was observed over the past week, though anglers caught a few incidentally while trolling for other species in Au Train Bay in shallow depths of 20 to 45 feet of water. Boat anglers reported high fish counts on sonar in front of river mouths and near Scott Falls.
Keweenaw Bay/Huron Bay: Anglers reported fair fishing, with catches consisting primarily of coho salmon and splake while trolling and casting near shore around river mouths. A few brown trout were also caught. Shore anglers reported steady fishing over the past week, with many catching coho salmon and splake. Anglers jigging for lake trout and lake whitefish reported a slow bite.
Traverse Bay/Portage Entry: Inclement weather and wind reduced angling pressure in these ports. However, anglers who were able to make it out reported fair fishing for lake trout while trolling spoons and flasher-and-fly combinations in 80 to 120 feet of water. Anglers also reported a few coho salmon in low numbers.
Les Cheneaux/DeTour: Fishing pressure in the area slowed significantly due to windy and rainy weather. No angling activity was reported in DeTour. In Hessel, pier anglers caught an occasional northern pike. Anglers also caught a few yellow perch out of the Cedarville boat launch and around the Government Bay area.
