MARQUETTE — Beginning on May 19, JML Forestry, a Longyear company, will host a series of free virtual learning events across northern Michigan for landowners interested in exploring how careful forest management can help their land grow healthier, increase its value and earn revenue from well-planned harvests.

Sustainable land management balances environmental concerns with the health and value of forestland. Selective harvests diversify the age and species of trees, making forests more resistant to pests, disease and the impact of climate change.

The removal of carefully selected trees allows sunlight to more easily reach the understory, encouraging regeneration and new growth. Responsible, ethical forest management also helps sustain a diverse array of wildlife by making sure that habitats remain safe and undisturbed.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is home to 4% of the state’s forestland. The land continues to grow and thrive, thanks to the efforts of local experts who lead the nation in practicing effective forest management and sustainable timber harvesting techniques, organizers said.

“Our U.P. forestry team is dedicated to preserving the natural resources and habitats of our region,” said Tim Schneider, JML Forestry Operations general manager, in a news release. “We know what an impact our forests have on the health of the Upper Peninsula and our planet. That’s why we’re committed to sharing our expertise with our friends and neighbors who own and care for this beautiful land.”

JML Forestry’s virtual learning series, to be held via Zoom, will kick off on May 19 with a focus on the western U.P. Each session will feature a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. Two one-hour time slots will available for each date: 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. The region-specific events include a session on June 2 on the central and eastern U.P. as well as June 16 on the northern Lower Peninsula.

Guests may register at JML-Forestry.com/May19 or call 906-201-5333.

JML Forestry, based in Marquette, is a full-service forest/land management company owned by the Longyear Corporation. JML Forestry is certified and accredited by forestry associations, including Michigan Registered Foresters, the Society of American Foresters and Certified Foresters. The company is audited annually for compliance with FSC standards for internal lands.
