Ugandan scientist to give local address on agriculture

MARQUETTE — Dr. Justine Nakintu, American Association of University Women International Fellow from Uganda’s Mbarara University of Science and Technology, will share her research on sustainable agriculture and food preservation at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Women’s Federated Clubhouse, 104 W. Ridge St., Marquette. This event is free and open to the public.

Currently conducting research at Northern Michigan University’s Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences Department, Dr. Nakintu combines GIS mapping and laboratory studies to help Ugandan farmers optimize jackfruit cultivation. Her innovative work focuses on developing preservation methods for this nutrient-rich crop, which currently spoils within five days of harvest. This research aims to reduce food waste and create sustainable economic opportunities in Uganda, where jackfruit provides year-round nutrition.

Dr. Nakintu’s work at NMU includes mentoring students in international research, bringing a global perspective to local education. Her research is supported by an AAUW International Fellowship. Learn more about Dr. Nakintu and her research at https://nmu.edu/eegs/justine-nakintu.
