Barbara (Golenda) Forsberg

MARQUETTE — A new college scholarship will be available beginning this year from the Alger Regional Community Foundation.

The scholarship is in memory of Barbara (Golenda) Forsberg who graduated from Mather High School in 1949. Seniors at Munising, Superior Central and Grand Marais Public Schools planning to pursue a higher education degree in the Arts, Education or Music are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.

Barbara was born in Munising as the daughter of Beatrice (Beaudette) and David Golenda. She was the sister of Gene and Richard Golenda who also attended Mather High School.

She began high school by being appointed treasurer of the Mather Freshmen Class. Barbara went on to participate in the Mather High School Chorus, Library and Science Clubs, Girls’ Athletic Association, and her Senior Play.

Following graduation, Barbara worked in Munising before meeting her husband, Keith Forsberg, who had been a teacher and football and basketball coach at Mather High School during the 1950s.

She was active in Marquette arts and crafts circles, as well as the Yarnwinders Fiber Guild. Barbara was a knitter and weaver. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge of fiber arts with others.

Forsberg collected antiques, refinished furniture and conducted estate sales. She attended Northern Michigan University. For several years Barbara worked at Marquette’s Michigan Fair Gift Shop, where her talents were used to create store displays. She was also employed as a floral designer.
