Youngsters frolicked with sprinklers, kiddie pools and other toys in the morning.
However, the event symbolized more than just watery fun on a summer day.
Sarah Rehborg, director of Youth Services at the PWPL, said Friday was the last day of the library’s summer reading program.
She said the program was “awesome” and “fantastic.”

“I think we gave out more than a thousand books as prizes for the kids,” Rehborg said. “We’ve had close to 200 gift cards for the teenagers, lots of really fun programs.”
During the summer reading program, participants kept a log and were to read at least 10 different days before each book fair. They had to color in or put a sticker on each day that they read, were read to or listen to an audiobook. The youngsters then could choose the books they earned at a fair.
Youth Services programming, Rehborg said, will take a break for August, but it will resume when school starts, including story times and new programming.
For example, the PWPL Youth Events calendar indicated that “Wiggle Worms Storytime” will begin on Sept. 11 in the Great Room, with the Zen Den — a 15-minute group yoga and guided meditation followed by free play, a “mindfulness” activity and craft stations — also starting that day in the Great Room.
Friday’s “Bubble, Bubble, Splash!” event, though, didn’t focus on words and pictures as much as it allowed kids to be kids in a traditional warm-weather way.
One of the most popular “stations,” if you want to call it that, was the kiddie pool filled with suds, with suds continually added during the event.
It was a way for youngsters to cover themselves in soap, probably for the sole purpose of enjoyment rather than getting clean.
That fun wasn’t lost on Margaret Dobos, 7, of Marquette.
“I’m covered in bubbles,” the girl exclaimed.
There was, though, a minor down side.
“My eyes! My eyes!” she said after a few suds found their way there.
Fortunately, her dad was there to towel her off.
