MARQUETTE — Angeline Spreitzer will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Jan. 7.

Spreitzer was born in Calumet. She met her husband, Fred Phillips, when they sat next to each other in homeroom in school. Phillips was from Mohawk, but at the time Mohawk kids were bussed to go to school in Calumet. They were married in 1942 and lived in St. Ignace, where her husband worked for the state as a ferry captain before the Mackinac Bridge was built. After the bridge was completed, he was transferred to work at the Marquette Branch Prison in 1959. She joined St. Louis the King Church in Harvey that same year and has been a member ever since. She was an active member of the Altar Society

until 1982. She managed the Plaid Stamp Redemption Center for many years and also worked for the Marquette Fish Hatchery and Department of Natural Resources as a typist clerk and radio operator until 1982.

Spreitzer had four children, three boys and one girl. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, cooking, baking, and gardening. She has nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her family has always been active in the military service. Her brothers, husband, sons, son-in-law, and grandchildren have all served in the military.

Now, she is very active in the daily activities happening at Mill Creek. She enjoys a good roast beef dinner, crafting, bingo, exercising, and organizes a weekly Catholic mass for residents. She has raised over $300 for the Alzheimer’s Association by selling handmade bags made from up-cycled plastic materials. All of her children live in the Upper Peninsula and visit her almost every day.

Her life advice is, “Do what you can, as best you can and give it your all.” There will be a family celebration in Spreitzer’s honor at the Landmark Inn from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 8.
