NMU to offer bachelor’s degree program in human resources management

MARQUETTE — NMU’s College of Business will begin offering a new bachelor’s degree program in human resources management this fall, based on student interest and projected job growth.

The curriculum will be aligned with Society for Human Resource Management standards so that students can earn a professional SHRM credential after they fulfill their degree requirements.

“This is the first step in what I would call a transformation of our management curriculum,” said Business Dean Carol Johnson, in a report to the NMU Board of Trustees. “Our accreditors encourage us to update and modify our curriculum periodically and we have the motivated, engaged and qualified faculty required to offer this program. The projected growth in HR management jobs is 9 percent, so graduates will be able to find jobs and we think there will be strong demand for it.”

The college will add an employment law course and bring back several others that have not been offered recently, including compensation design and administration, seminar in human resources management, collective bargaining, and conflict management. The major will also incorporate interdisciplinary courses from the Department of Political Science and the School of Education, Leadership and Public Service.

More information will be available at https://nmu.edu/business/academics. The college may be contacted at business@nmu.edu or 906-227-2900.
