Dessert Wars
Peter White Public Library hosts ‘sweet’ event
MARQUETTE — If all wars were like the ones being held in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library on Tuesday, the world would be a much better — and sweeter — place.
The PWPL hosted sessions of “Dessert Wars” in which youngsters could create sugary concoctions on their own.
Amanda Pierce, PWPL Youth Service teen coordinator, was in charge of the Tuesday morning session in which the kids made three different desserts. “Our cake pops have to be animal-themed, the donuts are water-themed and then the cupcakes can be whatever they would like them to be,” Pierce said.
The kids had many options for their desserts beyond mere frosting.
“We have a bunch of different supplies for the kids, and I can help with them whatever they need,” Pierce said. “We have fondant, we have frosting, we have sprinkles, a bunch of different gummy candies and stuff.”
Pierce said Dessert Wars marked the last event in the Teen Reads! program for youth ages 13 to 18. In June, they made candy sushi with ingredients such as Rice Krispies and chocolate sauce, which she said “went over really well.”
The kids got to taste what they made on Tuesday, but the event was about more than just decorating desserts.
And even though it was titled “Dessert Wars,” the creations weren’t judged.
“It’s kind of letting them use their imaginations to create something,” Pierce said.
One of the youngsters using her imagination was Rose Elenbaas, 13, of Marquette.
Her donut resembled a cresting blue-green ocean wave.
“It’s fun,” Elenbaas said of the activity.
