Between the Columns: Check out what’s available at Peter White Public Library

Here are some new additions to Peter White Public Library’s Nonfiction collection.

“Agate Hunting Made Easy: How to Really Find Lake Superior Agates” by Jim Magnuson (553.87 MA) is the up-to-date edition that gives readers the best possible chance at success along the hunting trail. This new edition is highly visual because successful agate hunting relies on visual cues and “identification hints.” Magnuson increases his emphasis on prospecting because it has become more difficult to find productive locations where a hunter can gain authorization. Inside, the photography has been updated to highlight a broader range of locations. Readers of this book may also be interested in checking out our Yooperlite Kit from the Library of Things.

“The Company of Owls” by Polly Atkins (598.97 AT). While facing chronic illness at her cottage, Polly Atkins looks to the trees and the animals among them for companionship. Atkins befriends a clutch of tawny owls and watches as a particular trio of owlets grows from fledglings to young adults. The Company of Owls is equal parts a love letter to owls and a reflection on what makes them, and us, unique. Readers of this book may also enjoy “Is a River Alive?” by Robert Macfarlane (577.64 MA) and “The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World” by Robin Wall Kimmerer (581.6097 KI).

“I’ve Got Time” by Paul Loomans (153.753 LO) is modern, fast-paced life swallowing you whole? Do you feel that time is compressed and it’s slipping through your fingers? Well Zen monk Paul Loomans has a solution for you! In seven steps you can form a new, calmer connection to time while still being able to get everything done. His method of “Time Surfing” is about attuning your senses to the best time management techniques and learning how to read the waves as they come at you. As the reader progresses through the method, they can immediately start to apply the individual instructions while approaching daily tasks and activities. It’s not necessary for you to actively meditate in order to use this method. The method itself will invite you to do so. Readers of this book may also enjoy “Saving Time: Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock” by Jenny Odell (153.753 OD) and “When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing” by Daniel H. Pink (153.7 PI).

“Ally is a Verb: A Guide to Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples” by Rose LeMay (323.1197 LE). What can you do to be a better ally for your Indigenous colleagues, community members, and friends? In her book, LeMay writes key principles to promote reconciliation, deepen your practice of allyship, and contribute to meaningful change. The book dives into the true history shared by Indigenous peoples and colonial governments and how to be an active team player for equality and inclusion. Readers of this book may also enjoy “500 Nations: An Illustrated History of North American Indians” by Alvin M. Josephy (971.1 JO) and “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee; An Indian History of the American West” by Dee Brown (970.5 BR).
