New at Peter White Public Library

What is hitting the new shelves this week for kids at the Peter White Public Library? We have several popular intermediate and reader books that kids will be anxious to get their hands on, along with a new series for caregivers looking for a way to help their children understand more complex social/emotional situations

Branches and Acorn books-New series and continuing series

The Acorn and Branches books are really great books that have wide range appeal, with full color illustrations, relatable and engaging characters and can are great read-alouds while still being perfect for kids who are independent readers. This week, we have several new series hitting the shelves, as well as continuations of popular series that your kids will be clamoring for! Acorn books are for younger early reader kids, while the branches books are great for kids reading independently.

Mermaid Days by Kyle Lukoff

This is a new Acorn series, and kids will be excited! Mermaids are always wildly popular, and with the colorful illustrations and easy, short text this newest edition to Acorn’s lineup will hit the spot.

Unicorn and Yeti by Heather Burnell

Unicorn and Yeti is an Acorn series. These 2 best friends find themselves in a myriad of relatable situations, and are a great model for young children who might find themselves in sticky friendship spots. Two new books in the series coming this week “Stuck with You”, and “Together”.

Princess Truly by Kelly Greenawalt

The newest books in the Acorn series, Princess Truly are “I am Mighty” and “I am a Good Friend”. All the titles in this series are great for boosting a child’s sense of self and self-affirmation. Text and illustrations are kept simple and relatable.

Racing Ace by Larry Brimmner

This Acorn series, containing STEAM themes, is new to PWPL this week! Perfect for the young doer and innovator in your home, these titles show kids how to work a problem from beginning to end, and models the reality of failing and trying again. Titles are “Ride It! Patch It!”, “Build It! Jump It!” and “Drive It! Fix it!”

Mister Shivers by Max Brallier

“A Walk in the Dark and Other Scary Stories” is the newest title in this Acorn series. Finding books that are a little scary (but not too scary) for the younger kids in your life who think they want a scary story can be tough! This series delivers.

Owl Diaries by Rebecca Elliott

This popular beginning chapter book series has two new books out! #16, “Get Well, Eva” and #17, “Eva in the Band”, are now available. Eva fans will be excited, and if you haven’t started reading Owl Diaries yet, now is the time!

Dragon Masters by Tracey West

The Dragon Masters series, a more advanced series in the Branches run, has been wildly popular for a few years. It is dragons after all! This series is moving toward being more of a full-length chapter books, which full paragraphs and black and white pictures. New out is #22 “Guarding the Invisible Dragons”. If you have an independent reader who loves adventure, and dragons, check this series out!

The Last Firehawk by Katrina Charman

Of the Branches series, The Last Firehawk is the only one that is formatted as an epic quest, and really requires that the series be read in order. The newest book, #11 “The Underland” has been highly anticipated by fans of the series. It is a great intro to epic quest fantasy series for young readers. There are still some black and white illustrations, with a thrilling overarching quest for the heroes to save their homeland.

I Like To Read

The I Like to Read early readers are some of the best readers out there for children who are just starting to read. PWPL has added many to our collection in the last year. The books come with a guided reading level A, B, C and onword. Level A & B books tend to b perfect for sight word recognition, and then they get more advanced as the level goes up. Along with being really well done with appropriate number of words and vocabulary, these books stand out because they are full-color illustrated larger books, looking almost more like picture books with their illustrations.

Am I a Frog by Lizzy Rockwell

This is the newest I Like To Read book in our collection. Level G, it is for more advanced readers and is a beautiful blending of an engaging read and non-fiction content of how a frog grows and develops.

Teach your Dragon by Steve Herman

New to PWPL shelves are several of the books from the “Teach your Dragon” series by Steve Herman that address social/emotional instruction. The illustrations are cute with an adorable little dragon that will keep kids engaged throughout the book. The books do just managed to avoid being didactic, but are straightforward and don’t try to hide the lesson in a story. They also highlight vocabulary for each topic being address, and try to help children understand some of the more complex situations and words. Toeing the line between story and instructional, the titles of each book will help guide your selection based on need. Titles being added are:
