Misusing our military

I need to speak out against how our military is being used. Twice now, first bombing a government facility in Iran, and now abducting the president of Venezuela, we have unconstitutionally committed acts of War on other nations without congressional authorization. These missions were very successful; objectives achieved, few casualties, no immediate fallout. These successes feed a powerful narrative: Americans are strong, Americans get the bad guys, Americans are heroes.   That narrative is dangerous. As a retired National Weather Service meteorologist with two degrees in atmospheric science, I was outraged to read the Trump Administration has proposed the elimination of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado. This center has provided high quality atmospheric research in the U.S. since its establishment in 1960. According to NCAR, the organization advances atmospheric science breakthroughs by providing the research community with leading-edge modeling, observational tools and computing resources. Toys for Tots thankful

On behalf of the Marine Corps League Lake Superior Detachment 764, we extend our sincere gratitude to the community for their support of the Toys For Tots Campaign in 2025. Through generous contributions and active participation, our campaign successfully collected more than 4700 toys, 1975 stocking stuffers, 469 books, and over $12,300 in monetary donations utilized for purchasing additional toys. The recent shenanigans of certain members of the Houghton County Board are but a microcosm of the deeds being perpetrated against fellow human beings by the Trumpist "christian" right wing nationalists all across the USA. Local business went extra mile

I would simply like to extend my compliments to Spice Merchants. I recently placed an order with them over the phone, but could not pick up the order until the next day. They were most accommodating, and, due to the rather non-accommodating Christmas parking rules in town, they offered to run the package out to me if I just called and let them know I was there, or coming. This was a breath of fresh air, rather than have to fight to find a close parking space, or return in the afternoon for the few hours of free parking. Way to go, Spice Merchants! Prop was political theater

On Dec. 9, I was in attendance in Houghton in opposition to a proposed resolution that would codify there being only two genders in Houghton county policies and public records. But I realized there that this really wasn't about transgender Americans or issues related to their public life. It was a political stunt. Political theater pandering to a segment of the voter base who are vocal about cable news talking points, but not truly in tune with the issues of their community.
