AAA advises how to avoid problems with holiday travel

Planning to hit the highways for Thanksgiving? If so, you won’t be alone. AAA expects record-breaking travel numbers this Thanksgiving –an estimated 71.7 million Americans. Which means likely more motorists stuck on the roadside as well. AAA estimates more than 570,000 will have some type of vehicle problem, with the three most common calls being for flat tires, dead batteries and lockouts. Which is why AAA is recommending getting the vehicle checked out before the journey. “Don’t let car trouble be the reason you don’t make it to Thanksgiving dinner,” said Adrienne ...

Christmas Cheer Club is the most wonderful time of the year

Friday marked the beginning of the Mining Journal’s annual Cheer Club fundraiser. The yearly holiday initiative sees people from all around the community donate new, unwrapped toys and financial donations to donate to the Salvation Army of Marquette County and St. Vincent de Paul for distribution to those in need around our community. “We’re starting off a bit earlier this year to make sure that the kids get everything they need in time for the holidays,” said Ann Troutman, The Mining Journal’s publisher. “The generosity of the community has been overwhelming each year this ...

There is more to hunter safety than gun safety

Hunting season may only last a little over two weeks but many people count down the days all year until they can break out their hunter orange clothes. Hunting matters to Northeast Michigan’s environment, as overpopulated deer tend to overeat their habitat, making way for the invasive species they won’t eat to thrive and limiting ...

Consumers who suspect they have fallen victim to fraud should report it to the DIFS Fraud Investigation Unit. “Protecting Michiganders is DIFS’ number one priority. Fraud schemes have become more sophisticated, often using a recognizable phone number or caller ID to trick consumers into disclosing sensitive information,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. ...

Time to get flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccinations

Planning to gather for Thanksgiving with family and friends? Both the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions are playing that day, so there’s an extra incentive to settle down with a crowd post-meal to relax and let everything digest. Knowing that people will be coming together for the holidays next week and in December, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services recommends getting flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines to hopefully ward off what others might be harboring. Few Wisconsin residents so far have taken advantage of the protection vaccines can provide, according to a DHS news ...
