DNR: With young wildlife it’s best to keep your distance

While snow may remain on the ground in the region — though fading fast — spring is taking hold. It’s the time of year that brings a host of young wild animals into the world — some, such as red fox and raccoons, may already have litters hidden away. Same with black bears, which give birth while hibernating; a recent video an Upper Peninsula resident posted on Facebook showed a sow with four cubs trailing behind her. With this week leading up to Easter Sunday for Christians plus having the Jewish holiday of Passover starting Wednesday through April 9, many families will gather for traditional meals. Mother’s Day, too, is just around the corner. Donald Trump spent the weekend threatening to commit war crimes in Iran, only to back away Monday morning — just in time for financial markets to rebound. Trump postponed his ultimatum to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants for another five days, claiming “good” talks to end the conflict. (It is unclear who the president is talking to since Iran denied any exchange.) Obviously, the sooner Trump ends his unnecessary and unfocused war, the better. Michigan officials are touting a significant rise in the number of students who received state financial aid for higher education in 2024-2025, while encouraging more to seek such assistance. The state awarded more than $558.9 million in state financial aid to more than 153,000 Michigan students during the 2024-2025 academic year, as detailed in the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential’s annual State Scholarships and Grants Report. When Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the international condemnation from Europe and elsewhere was loud and clear. Leaders did not expect legal threats to shift Vladimir Putin or end war crimes by his troops.
