NEGAUNEE -- James Bender struck out 13 while allowing just one hit and one walk in the Negaunee Diamonds' six-inning 10-0 victory over the Ida Blue Streaks in an American Legion baseball game played Friday night.
Ida, a town near the Ohio border in the southern Lower Peninsula, managed just a single by Ethan Eyler as Negaunee ended the game due to the 10-run rule with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Bender pitched all six innings for the Diamonds (3-4).
"Bender pitched very well and with a lot of energy," Diamonds manager Jason Siik said. "We drew a couple of walks and had some timely hits."
And they made the most of them, such as by Taylor Laurin, who was 3 for 4 with a triple, three runs scored and a stolen base -- a steal of home in Negaunee's five-run fourth inning.
Teammate AJ Suardini was also 3 for 4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a steal, while Keenan Johnson went 2 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and a run and Jadan Grobar was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Another player taking advantage of his chances was Carter Richardson. Despite going 0 for 1, he drew three walks and crossed home plate three times.
They tagged the loss on Ida starter Caleb Pfeiffer, who went four innings and gave up nine runs on 10 hits as he walked five and fanned three.
