Marquette runners sweep their own XC relays

MARQUETTE — A change in venue didn’t hurt the home team as Marquette Senior High School swept to team titles at the Marquette Relays held at Presque Isle Park on Friday afternoon.
The event was formerly held at the high school before moving to the scenic lakeside park this year.
Weather conditions were cool, breezy but sunny, according to MSHS cross country coach Kyle Detmers, who took over the reins after Dale Phillips retired after last season following 40 years in the top cross country post at Marquette, 44 years overall of coaching runners and 49 years in all as a coach.
On Friday, the Redmen and Redettes each finished with half the points of runner-up Ishpeming in each meet, though it was Negaunee that claimed the “individual” winning duo in the girls meet.
With the runner in each duo alternating mile-long runs for six miles total, the Miners’ Emily Paupore and Clara Johnson clocked 35 minutes, 12 seconds to win the girls title by well over four minutes ahead of runners-up Delaney Sall and Sammy Borzick of Marquette.
But the Redettes scored 12 points to Ishpeming’s 24. Negaunee was third with 27, Gladstone fourth with 40 and Westwood fifth with 46.
Sall and Borzick came in at 39:35, just one second ahead of third-place Kayla Kaukola and Katie Loman of Ishpeming in 39:36.
The Redettes clinched the title when their second-fastest pairing, Guinn Wuorinen and Chloe Henning, finished fourth overall in 40:34, and third fastest, Josie Danielkiewicz and Emma Stahl, were sixth overall in 41:00.
Also in the top eight were MSHS’ Claudie Hale and Kayley Elmblad in seventh and the Hematites’ Chyanne Gardner and Chloe Sjoholm in eighth.
The five schools finished in the same order in the boys meet, Marquette scoring 11 points to Ishpeming’s 22, with Negaunee scoring 24, Gladstone 28 and Westwood 68.
Veterans Luke Rambo and Garrett Rudden scored an almost two-minute victory in the boys meet, finishing in 28:40 to the 30:28 posted by runners-up Elliot Prusi and Colton Yesney of Negaunee. Gladstone’s Jake Strasler and Adam Bruce were third in 31:11.
The Redmen wrapped up the team title with four tandems finishing in the top eight. Clinching their low point total were Garrett Zueger and Mathurin Gagnon, fourth overall in 32:08, and Drew Thomas and Nathan Zika, sixth in 32:35.
In between them was Ishpeming’s top finishers, Jonah Broberg and Spencer Giroux in fifth in 32:30. In addition, the Hematites’ Devin Tasson and Kyle “KJ” Pruett were seventh and MSHS’ Ramsey Nofal and Moses Waite in eighth.
